Thai Bodywork
What is Traditional Thai Bodywork?
Thai massage is a type of bodywork within the system of Traditional Thai Medicine (TTM). It is based in element theory, viewing the anatomy and physiology of the body as a balanced combination of earth, water, fire, and wind. Techniques performed aim to address imbalances to restore proper function. These techniques include compressions, joint mobilizations and stretches, acupressure and work along the sen lines, and much more.
Unlike most Western-style massages, Thai bodywork is performed on a comfortable padded floor mat. You remain fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing. The practitioner uses their full body (hands, forearms, knees, feet, etc.) to perform various techniques to help accomplish your treatment goals.
What can it do for you?
If you have already been to my Integrated Massage Therapy page, you’ll see that I’ve included a very wide range of potential effects from massage…ranging from physical and mental relaxation to deep clinical bodywork. Every possible outcome from massage on a table can also be accomplished through Thai massage. Rather than being a supplement to other types of massage, it is a different approach to treating the body.
For anyone who has heard of Thai massage before, you might have the impression that it is aggressive and painful. While any type of bodywork has the potential for this, it is certainly not necessary to get effective treatment. Aside from element theory, Thai bodywork is also built on Buddhist principles…wishing happiness and wellness for others, attempting to not inflict harm upon others, etc. This bodywork is designed to SUPPORT you, not cause unnecessary distress.
